the composite deck advantage

Z42 composite decking’s strongest advantage is that it tackles four common concerns with plywood pontoon decks: moisture damage, weight, panel seams, and freeze-related delamination. These four factors provide for a compelling case for choosing it over marine plywood.

1. No wood to rot

Z42 is a wood-free composite deck that is rot-resistant and waterproof. It removes the concern of a wood deck absorbing moisture, mold growth, and deck rot that is found in traditional plywood systems.

Why it matters: You’re choosing a structural foundation that avoids a major wood-related maintenance concern—not simply a different floor covering.

2. Less weight without sacrificing strength

The decking is 40% lighter and 2X stronger than marine-grade plywood.

Why it matters: Less deck weight can support better acceleration and fuel efficiency, and its strength can significantly increase the structural rigidity of your boat.

3. A seamless, one-piece foundation

Forest River Marine uses a single-piece deck rather than multiple plywood panels. It is chemically bonded and bolted to the aluminum frame. Then it is covered with a vinyl flooring that will never detach from the decking and will always look the same as new, unlike boats with seams.

Why it matters: It eliminates panel-to-panel deck joints and provides a continuous foundation beneath the finished flooring.

4. Avoiding moisture-related freeze damage

The Z42 as impermeable to water, avoiding the moisture absorption associated with plywood and the resulting freeze-related delamination concern.

Why it matters: For a boat exposed to seasonal temperature changes in Minnesota, keeping water out of the structural deck is a practical durability benefit.

Bottom line: The Z42 composite deck is a lighter, wood-free, seamless deck that avoids several familiar plywood problems, and can only be found on Forest River Marine pontoons: South Bay and Dockside.
